Poor Len with all his good intentions he has found we are really harsh critics as far as the real facts go-- it's the 'that's my family' emotion of the thing -- we are rather melodramaric at times----see--- we even have a male finding a tear in his…

Yes Marie I enjoyed the novel too; it had me a bit teary at times. I have talked to Len and he wrote the book under a word number restraint and had to cut large sections immediately before publication which must have been difficult to remain cohesiv…

Yes, I agree about the facts, but I still enjoyed reading it. Thank you for all the research and work you have done over many years. Cheers, Marie

Some of the family are upset about "Enduring Spirit" as it is so factually wrong when it comes to the events of their lives in England; wrong places, wrong sequence, wrong events etc. However I take the view it is a novel and just hope people who wa…

Thanks you Paul, my husband and I have not long returned from a trip where we visited Plymouth. I read Len P Hedges book "Enduring Spirit" while we were in England and felt that I had got a good insight into the lives of Henry and Sassannah from tha…

Thanks Paul, I enjoyed reading your findings. I consider that your trip to England was well worth the effort as your research, photos and sketches have put a much more personal perspective to Henry and Susannah's lives, even down to picturing where…

With reference to Henry's newspaper death notice. If people have not seen the early NSW newspapers I think we have reproduced all early reports, notices and advertisements from 1803 to his death notice in 1846 in Damned Rascals? with transcipts wher…

Boarding Hulk Dunkirk in Plymouth

I recently returned from a holiday in Europe and spent some weeks near Plymouth and decided to research where Henry and Susannah stepped from England and spent months aboard Dunkirk in1786/87.
The initial clue came from the front page of “The return of Convicts confined onboard Dunkirk” part of which is Plate C 9 in Damned Rascals. Part of the heading reads “Dunkirk Hulk in the Harbour of Hamoze, Plymouth”. The Hamoaze is that part of the Tamar River west of St… Continue

Dear Paul,

I would also like to thank you for your latest very interesting contribution to the Kable Mob site regarding your Plymouth findings. Also, as Ken and myself attended the Australian Day Luncheon earlier this year when we took the opportunity of purchasing a copy of your book the "The Damned Rascals", we gained much further knowledge of my side of the Kable family.
After attending the Luncheon we took the opportunity of visiting Ken's cousins at their property at Groseworld, which ironically is only a few streets away from Henry and George Esto's land (plate F 23). Whilst there we visited St. Matthews Church in Windsor where I had my photo taken beside the Kable vault which was a thrill. Also ironically, Ken's uncle (an Elder ) and his family were members of the Congregation for many years.
After reading plate 16 in your book it was interesting to note the reference to John Jones, part of my George Esto Kable line, who supplied the bricks and apparently rebuilt St. Matthews.
Thank you again for your excellent imput.
Regards, Dawn.

Paul, I have suggested to the publisher of the latest book "Eternal Spirit" that Len Hedges the author purchase "Damned Rascals?" if he intends writing a sequel. I have not finished reading the book yet but the content social history details are marvelous -- unfortunatley the family history has a number of discrepancies which he could have avoided especially if he had made Aus connections before he started writing -- what a pity-- the general public will however believe everything written but that includes the parts he had faltered on-- making the truth convoluted. --- once more ---
