Who knows what happened to Charles Dickenson Kable ?? I have traced him to the day he was discharged from the Moreton Bay Penal Colony on 6 November 1837. Nothing after that date.
Ironically, his brother William Nathenial died from a fall on 16 Nov 1837 at Bathurst, was there a connection ???
I agree with everything you say here Neil. Yes a great mystery and so many people have been trying to solve it. We have had Arthur Myers who missed very little considering the facilities he had to work with in the 60's , 70's. Then there was Paul Kable, June Whittaker, Julia Kable , Bryan Thomas, Patricia Kable , James Kable, Jim Kable, probably Hilda McLean maybe Scott Kable myself --yourself and others who do not come to mind this moment, but to name a few and no way can anybody crack that big question. !!
Yes the timing of that mysterious fall of William's down the stairs to "hit his head and die "was really most strange. Then again I have been told that the death certificate of William said in pencil "shot accidently?" -- was there a cover -up.? Did one brother set up the other down in Windsor when Charles was supposed to ask a man if he wanted to buy the horse which he is supposed to have stolen-- did he really do it-?? - or was that to get him out of the way? After all the sisters Charelton were with the two brothers Kable and after the incident William married Elizabeth Charleton. However Elizabeth had told a lie to cover up for Charles, and been found to commit perjury the year before -- why would one smell a rat I wonder?Did Charles therefore change his name to get a new life after his revenge was complete-- oh now I'm writing a fictious book. -- isn't hard. !!!
I had written earlier that Charles was discharged from the Moreton Bay Penal Colony on 6 November 1837. I now find that that was the date he was due for release. In fact the Sydney Gazette of 16 February 1832 reported that he was returned to Sydney aboard the "Governor Phillip" on 14 February 1832 to the prison hulk "Phoenix" moored at Lavender Bay. However, I still can't find what happened after he joined the hulk, apparently his transfer was due to some pardon from the Governor !!.
I have located three different websites that indicate that he died in 1849, two list Moreton Bay as his place of death but I can't find proof of this.
My recent research at the Queensland State Library shows that on 27 January 1827 Charles wife Mary sought permission for "free passage and the indulgence of being with her unhappy husband at Moreton Bay". The Library had many similar letters from other convicts wives but these were all rejected by the Commandant of the Penal Colony because of cost, lack of living quarters and, more importantly, that wives could not be suitably employed..
Another letter was found where Susannah Mileham sought permission on 16 March 1827 to send a "comfort parcel" to her brother. This was approved.
Yes again Neil, Patricia Kable who lives in Brisbane has been chasing poor old Charles round Moreton Bay for ever so long. But she too did not really establish anything for certain. She too found im gettin aship to Sydney and then after that he seems to have disappeared. As he had apenal record i ha crazy idea he may have goone away over to america as aprogram on V was saying tha about that time gold fever struck over there and maybe that sounded like agood idea.
Also when one looks across the then existing family and what happened year for year around that time it makes one wonder what really happened when Williiam Nathaniel "fell down the stairs?"
Did you ever meet Arthur Myers who wasa really good family istory expert bout all that went on and used to even travel up to the areas to look into records and go to places he knew that William had been. He told me then that there was a story in the William branch that a person Kable by name opened the front door in Bathurst "in the early days ' to be shot and killed. He did not know who the Kable was but if you look at their whereabouts there are few contenders to this title.-- new post here ---
could there have been a cover up if Charles sought revenge on his brother for being set up over the horse stealing charge.? Doesn't it seem strange that a young man would steal a horse and then be silly enough to try selling it so soon after he stole it.? Maybe that was trap. Now what could be the motive here?
i see one in my imagination. If you look at the court papers you see where the Charleton sisters were in the company of the Kable brothers. Elizabeth went to really great lengths to give a false alibi to the police about Charles whereabouts regarding a theft the year before but she was caught out. Now she went out of her way for Charles. But in the end the elder brother William ends up with Elizabeth and Charles has the younger sister Mary. He may have originally been the boyfriend of Elizabeth and the elder brother took his girl.??? So when Charles in conveniently sent to prison out of the way William and a very pregnant Elizabeth?? are magically in Bathurst being husband and wife.
Charles gets out and heads for Bathurst. ( the timing for this appears to be spot on -- ) Lo and behold an incident happens with some strange questions to ask regarding how William suddenly died after falling. Was there more ?could Charles have been the" mysterious person who shot and killed a Kable when he opened the front door?" my mind boggles -- if only fiction and fact could really survive well together this would be my ficticious tale. Then after a scurry as William has paid his price with his life for betraying his brother in all ways someone there has hurried to get Charles out of the country to USA ( possible with their connections re shipping ) where there are a lot of Kable people anyway. !!I It would have been known by somebody that Charles had suffered unnecessarily in gaol for years -- only thing is that the William branch will now skin my alive for suggesting such a situation I suppose. !!! oh I had better start writing my ficticious book -- no it could be unpopular couldn't it!! Let June, Paul and Len take the flack for all that. I'm always ready to see if anybody can come up with a theory as interesting as mine. ----------------------------------as good as any mystery I think.
different websites saying Charles died in 1849 I think are a heap of presumptions people make and call fact-- I should talk!! -- because he was not head of agin or seemed to be in the records.
This reminds me of a great example years ago when a certain lady author who was a history lecturer at Macquarie University had her students doing research for her then used tat research and published a book on early Australan days. She said that Henry and Diana were twins which told us a lot about her early Australian knowledge . How that came about was that they were recorded in the St. Phillip's register as being christened on the same day-!! which we know was right but does not mean any more than that. She therefore in writing her book on that time could not have any idea regarding the Kable saga which seems highly unlikely one would have thought. Anything is possible.
I think we'll leave it at this for now, when I find out how and when Charles was discharged from the prison hulk the picture may be clearer. The possibility of going to America is feasible.
Thanks Neil well you have heard ALL my theories !!LOL---- and now I'll wait for you to see if you get something more.! I hope you do.
kind regards,
Zillah
I have just placed a notice in the social part of the Forum announcing a celebration for William Charleton and Mary Getty. There are two email addresses for contact so wondered what you think of persuing the idea that these ladies may have links to the Charleton side of the story -- re Charles Dickenson and his brother William Kable. It just might be a lead. .
